Menacing-looking Kiwi character actor John Karlsen had a prolific career in Italian films, where he spent much of his professional life. He arrived in Italy in the late 1950s, making his film debut with an uncredited role in the Rome-shot Mamie Van Doren vehicle Le bellissime gambe di Sabrina (1958). A member of Federico Fellini's regular company, he appeared in four of the director's projects between 1963 and 1973. He's best known to American audiences for his role as an evil 14th-century duke in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989), which was partially shot in Italy. He also appeared in several other international productions shot in Italy. Rod Johns was a generous member of the film and TV industry, donating much time and effort over the years.
Rod's vibrant, active life saw his involvement across a wide range of creative areas and daring pursuits. Rod was an actor, writer, boxer, runner, lover of motorbike racing and sky diving, amongst many other things.
The list of even just Rod's most recent activities is a testament to a life crammed with experiences: Rod was second assistant camera on recent David Blyth film Ghost Bride (2013), he played a memorable starring role in recent Steven Samuel Johnson short film The Window (2014) and was associate producer on Fred Pott's Clear Eyes Rise of the Zombies (in production). Rod's credit on steam punk heist short Stella 459 reads Associate Producer. However, as he paid tribute to Rod, Director Jonathon Rayner-Burt told a bigger story: 'Rod was everywhere and everything on [Stella 459]. Producer, set engineer and carpenter, grip, gaffer, AD, Evil Guard #1, stunty, fight choreographer, the works. He'd be up in the ceiling rigging lights or working a drill or shouting and generally getting on with getting things done.
